It seems like the most exciting time in Wayne County is the week of the "World's Fair". It is so fun to see old classmates and friends that have moved away but always manage to make time to come back this week to enjoy the festivities.
Brody decided he was going to participate in the Gymkhana, swimming games, and the rodeo this year. I had to chuckle at him and might have even made the comment that maybe he should have practiced his horse events earlier than the week before the events took place.
When we got ready to go to Loa to practice the Gymkhana Midge came out of the house with this outfit on. It was all I could do not to giggle. Check out that hat! Seriously...it was an old felt hat of Brody's that had been left out in the sun, rain, you name it for way too long. She was so proud of herself and I must say, she wore it pretty well.
When we arrived at the arena, she was pretty content to just sit on the fence or "ride" Buckie while she followed Shane.
Haylie didn't mind riding with her dad. She said Buckie was really soft.
She got pretty good at riding around the arena all by herself.
By the end of the day she had figured out how to get on all by herself. She was so proud!
She liked being as big as her brother and being able to ride her own horse without any help. Brody was pretty good at tending her.
Even though Brody is a good sport and tends pretty well, he still has a little nonsense running through his veins. He likes to trot or lope and Midgie does not. However, when she rides with him she knows she has to be ready and hold on at all times. She doesn't like it but she survives.
On performance day since Haylie was to young to participate she thought she would just hurry and run through the Keyhole 1 time before everyone arrived. I have to say she did a pretty good job. She even got ole' Buckie to "run" back.
Brody warming up Custer. He ended up with a first place in the barrels and second in the poles.
The kiddos absolutely LOVE the pool games. Both kids are excellent swimmers and have been for years so it is fun for them to go and win some medals. Three cute friends: Willow, Midge, Laine.
Ready...set...go! Front crawl. Haylie took first.
Getting ready for the back stroke. Such a determined little face.
This photo is a little deceiving because right after I snapped this shot, Haylie broke away from the pack and ended up placing first in this race as well.
Brody's turn next. He is a great swimmer with perfect form. Sheri Ellett always comments on how his form is classic textbook form.
For the front crawl they had to swim the length of the pool and then back. Brody took 1st place in this race and was pretty excited.
Next up was the back crawl. Once again he came out strong and had great form.
And... even with going a little crooked managed to take first place again.
Brody took 1st in the front crawl, backstroke, 4 man relay. They ran out of medals so he was perfectly content with the two he received.
Such fun friends. Haylie opted for taking the prizes instead of medals. Her little friend Laine didn't get as much so Haylie split her loot with her. What a good little friend. I'm so happy for little girls with kind hearts!
When the games were over and I was getting Haylie out of the pool, I asked her if she had fun. Her response..."that was the funnest thing ever!" I think we will do it again next year!
Brody and Shane participated in several events at the rodeo. Together they did: Maiden Race: Shane hit Brody so hard with the horse that he nearly fell off the barrel and then when he went to jump on he didn't have a good hold so when Shane started to run Brody fell and received a no time, Hide Race: They made a clean run and Brody got on super fast but not fast enough to be in the money. Brody blames it on the fact that Uncle Lance made them use the "slow" horse instead of the "fast" horse. Ribbon Pull: Shane roped the calf but Brody had to chase it round and round to get to it's tail where the ribbon was. After almost getting clotheslined by the rope and being completely exhausted from running in circles, Shane told him to go down the rope. This seemed to be working until the calf decided to kick. Brody got kicked super close to "the bad spot" and hit the ground like a ton of bricks. The EMT's and Cherie took him in the ambulance to examine him. I wish I would have gotten a picture of his face when Cherie told him to take his pants down. It was one of pure terror. He was checked out and was alright although he had quite a bruise and a sore leg for a few days. I was impressed with Brody's will to keep going. Even though he got completely beat up...he never quit! Shane and Richard participated in the wild cow milk again this year. Unfortunately Richard didn't catch but they have a new and improved game plan for next year. Shane also did team roping with Lance but didn't end up with any money there either. It was a really fun rodeo and I always like it a lot more when there are local cowboys that are participating, especially mine. Unfortunately, the lighting and my camera didn't work so well together so I don't have any pictures of the events they participated in.
Ready to go. What a cute little Cowgirl and Cowboy.
I love their smiles in the picture. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to turn an be upright.
